As of this writing, more than 170 Members of Congress have signed a petition authored by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) to force House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to allow a vote on a bipartisan resolution requiring a 72-hour public review period for major bills. That number includes five rank-and-file House Democrats who have opted to buck their leadership and sign onto the GOP measure. The bipartisan rebuke of Speaker Pelosi reflects rising public anger over Democratic leaders’ handling of the massive “stimulus” spending bill, the job-killing “cap & trade” national energy tax, and other giant pieces of legislation that were hidden from public view until just hours before they were brought to a final vote in the House.
As I said in my weekly press briefing this morning, the American people have never been more engaged in public policy than they are right now, and they understand what’s happening here in Washington.....http://republicanleader.house.gov/blog/?p=626

Eagle Forum Warns U.S. Treasury Secretary: 'The American People Do Not Want a New World Currency That China Would Control'
/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eagle Forum, a leading conservative grassroots organization founded by Phyllis Schlafly, applauds Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN-6th) for introducing a resolution which would bar the U.S. dollar from being replaced by any foreign currency. Bachmann's legislation was prompted by a series of contradictory public remarks made by U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner last week.
During a House Financial Services Committee hearing last week, both Secretary Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke clearly stated that they "categorically renounce" the proposal offered by China's top central banker to replace the devalued U.S. dollar with a new global currency. But, just 24 hours later, while speaking at the liberal Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Geithner contradicted his previous statement and declared that the U.S. Treasury Department was "actually quite open" to the idea of a global currency.
"The American people do not want a new world currency that China would control," said Eagle Forum President Phyllis Schlafly. "It is the Obama Administration's and the Federal Reserve's policies that are causing the dollar to take even bigger hits against other currencies."
"Simply replacing the dollar is not the solution," Schlafly said. "It would be yet another Band-Aide to cover up the real source of the problem which is Obama's tidal wave of unlimited bailouts, nationalization of the banks and the auto and mortgage industries, stimulus bills, and his proposed budget that will inevitably cause massive inflation and further strangle our economy."
"Eagle Forum commends Congresswoman Bachmann for aggressively questioning both Geithner and Bernanke during the committee hearing on Wednesday and for ensuring that they remain accountable for their sworn testimony," concluded Schlafly. "Congresswoman Bachmann is an example of the kind of leader that grassroots Americans are demanding from their elected officials, and we encourage even more Members of Congress to take direct action, like Michele, and to go on the offensive against this Administration's economic recklessness."
Rep. Michele Bachmann's resolution, H.J. Res. 41, was officially introduced on March 25, 2009. It currently has 29 cosponsors and has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. Because the U.S. Constitution allows the President to engage foreign governments in treaties, Bachmann's resolution provides for a constitutional amendment which would prohibit the President from entering into a treaty or other international agreement that would provide for the U.S. to adopt a currency issued by an entity other than the United States.

Missouri legislators honor Libertarian
America’s third largest political party joined the Missouri House of Representatives Wednesday in honoring Libertarian Party activist and Grandview City Councilman-elect Mike Ferguson. On Feb. 25, the House unanimously presented Ferguson with a resolution recognizing his community service and professional accomplishments.
“As a loving father, successful professional, knowledgeable educator, committed community activist and tireless public servant, Mike Ferguson is a great example of what the Libertarian Party is all about,” said William Redpath, Chairman of the Libertarian National Committee. “It is no surprise, and a great honor, that the Missouri House would take the time to recognize and thank a great Libertarian Party member.”
Ferguson ran unopposed earlier this year for a seat on the Grandview City Council. A former Kansas City journalist, Ferguson is also a successful staffing professional and member of several local government boards and commissions. Ferguson and his two children, Austin and Amber, attend Southland Baptist Church.
Ferguson is not the only Libertarian serving in Missouri government. In Springfield, Missouri’s third-largest city, Libertarians Tom Martz and Robert Stephens were the top two finishers for a seat on the Springfield City Council. They will meet in an April runoff election to decide which Libertarian joins Libertarian Councilman Doug Burlison on the City Council. Burlison was elected in 2007.
The resolution, sponsored by Representatives Jonas Hughes (D-Kansas City) and Jason Holsman (D-Kansas City) reads:

Georgia Legislature Blasts O'Hare Modernization Program as Wasteful Project
/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A resolution has been introduced in the Georgia Legislature calling Chicago's O'Hare Modernization Program, or OMP, a "Runway to Nowhere" and describing the project as "ill-conceived and premature." House Resolution 535 was introduced by Representative Joe Wilkinson, Chairman of the House Ethics Committee. It calls on Georgia Congressional delegation to stop all wasteful federal spending in relation to President Obama's recently approved stimulus package. The cost of OMP, which would add a third terminal to Chicago's O'Hare Airport, is currently estimated at approximately $20 billion.
"President Obama was right to warn the nation's mayors that he would call them out for spending federal tax dollars on pork. He should start with his hometown mayor," said Representative Wilkinson. "Here is a public works project that's riddled with allegations of corruption. As an extension of the Rod Blagojevich investigation, crony contractors are being charged with fraudulent bid-rigging schemes, and Chicago's mayor wants upwards of $20 billion from the American taxpayers to pay for it? If that's not pork, I don't know what is."
No one in Illinois is publicly acknowledging where the stimulus funds for the state will be used but there has been speculation that a significant portion will be used for the O'Hare Modernization Program. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has yet to reveal how and where he would like stimulus funds to be used. Given that the state of Illinois will not invest in the project, and the city of Chicago does not have the resources, it's likely the mayor will go around state government and take his case directly to Washington.
"Why should the people of Georgia and the rest of the nation cough up $20 billion to build an airport in Chicago, when their own state won't even pay for it?" continued Wilkinson. "Compare Chicago's project to Atlanta's request of $500 million for the new Hartsfield-Jackson international terminal. Atlanta and Chicago have virtually identical airports with identical traffic volume, yet Chicago's terminal will cost more than $19 billion more the proposed Atlanta project, and the airlines have affirmed that it will do very little to alleviate flight delays. The American people were right to stand up against the 'bridge to nowhere,' and it's time to do the same with the 'runway to nowhere.'"
Work on the next phase of the O'Hare expansion has not begun and funding for the $20 billion Program has not been secured. FAA studies show that the expansion will not provide any significant improvement of airline delays or alleviate congestion at O'Hare. Aviation experts say that OMP will instead produce massive delays and increase costs for both consumers and airlines during and after initial construction. In addition, the airlines, including United Airlines and American Airlines, have also called the OMP plan "ill-conceived" and "premature."
www.stop-omp.org is dedicated to stopping the senseless, ill advised and flawed O'Hare Modernization Program (OMP) and preventing further unnecessary displacement of families and the wasting of taxpayer dollars. Community leaders, concerned citizens, aviation industry leaders and economic experts continue to urge the FAA to adopt viable alternatives. These include runway configurations proposed by the Chicago air traffic controllers, use of congestion management techniques, reliance on other nearby airports, and construction of a third airport.
