NY Coalition Opposes Governor Paterson's Proposed Sugar Sweetened Beverage Tax

/PRNewswire/ -- New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes, a coalition formed in opposition to taxes on food and beverage products, today announced its disappointment in Governor Paterson's proposal to place a tax on sugar sweetened beverages of 12 cents per 12-ounce can. This tax would be 10 times higher on a 12 pack of non-alcoholic beverages, like soft drinks, than the state tax on a 12 pack of alcoholic beverages, like beer.

The coalition's members -- including thousands of New York residents across the state and business groups such as the New York State Restaurant Association, The New York Association of Convenience Stores, The Business Council of New York State and The National Supermarket Association -- agree that this is not the time to tax the groceries of hardworking New Yorkers. Last year Gov. Paterson claimed to have heard the voices of the New York people, but once again he is trying to fix his budget problems by taxing New Yorkers and putting thousands of instate jobs at risk.

"New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet in this economy and we shouldn't bear the burden of fixing the Governor's budget problems," said Nelson Eusebio, Chairman of New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes. "Another tax will be detrimental to hardworking New York businesses and residents."

The beverage industry currently supports thousands of well-paying jobs in New York, totaling some $6.7 billion in wages. These statewide jobs are held by hardworking New Yorkers in manufacturing, distribution and retail. The non-alcoholic beverage industry in New York State has a direct economic impact of $7 billion per year and supports an additional $18 billion in economic activity.

New Yorkers can join the coalition's fight at www.nobeveragetax.com in order to declare their support, sign the petition, and make their opposition known to the Governor and their State Representatives.

Illinois: Adam Andrzejewski Wins First Republican Straw Poll of 2010 Gov Race

We're going to be keeping up with an assortment of key races across the country. You're invited to check out our "Republican Candidate" blog for more election coverage. We're hearing that this race is one to watch. We've also rec'd some suggestions from across the state of Illinois and other areas that 39-year old Adam Andrzejewski is someone to watch. Read that polls showed Andrzejewski winning against current Governor Quinn by a fairly high margin. It's early and there are quite a few announced candidates in this race.

Another race of interest is going to be the New York gubernatorial race. Speculation is that Rudy Giuliani (R) is going to run and that Patterson (D) is being told by President Obama that he needs to bow out. What may be unusual about the President's intervention is that typically those kind of open moves come from the DNC (or RNC) and/or is done on a quieter basis. The news was leaked, according to the NY Times, by two Democrats.

Gubernatorial Candidate Places First in URF’s Conservative Summit Straw Poll

Illinois – Conservative values, solid financial policy, and a break from the same old political baggage and retribution that has shaped Illinois has landed Adam Andrzejewski exactly where he should be – at the head of the line. The results of a straw poll, hosted by the United Republican Fund and WIND radio, reveal Andrzejewski as the clear frontrunner among all six Republican gubernatorial candidates – prevailing over even the most politically experienced candidates. “The biggest surprise, perhaps, is that Andrzejewski was so organized at that event,” states Rich Miller on his blog post for Capitol Fax (1).

Andrzejewski has poised himself to be exactly the type of Governor that Illinois needs. "This race is a battle for the heart and soul of our party. Real reform, cut spending, create efficiencies, shared sacrifice that defends the tax payer. We are just on the verge of the economic spiral of Michigan and we need reform that will halt that. I have no political baggage. I am an outsider without Springfield experience," declared Andrzejewski in his closing statement for the Conservative Summit.

Andrzejewski has obtained strong support through grassroots efforts and his message of reform. And while some campaigns talk about grassroots, the Andrzejewski campaign is a good example of a strong grassroots initiative that has been effective.

Andrzejewski polled a 116 among a group of conservative activists that included Peter Roskam – U.S. Congressman from the 6th District; Tom Cross – House GOP leader; Steve Rauschenberger – former State Senator; Chris Lauzen – State Senator; Demetra DeMonte – Rep. Nat’l Committeewoman for Ill.; Eric Wallace- candidate for U.S. Senate; Jim Oberweis – candidate for U.S. House of Representative; and Fran Eaton – blogger, columnist and pundit of IllinoisReview.com. The summit took place Friday at Carlucci’s in Downer’s Grove.

UCLA School of Law Alumna Kirsten Gillibrand Appointed U.S. Senator

/PRNewswire/ -- UCLA School of Law alumna Kirsten Gillibrand '91 has been appointed today by New York Governor David A. Paterson to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton. Prior to her appointment, Gillibrand had been serving her second term as U.S. Representative to New York's 20th congressional district, representing counties across upstate New York.

"I am delighted that one of our alumni has been selected to serve in the United States Senate," said UCLA School of Law Dean Michael H. Schill. "Senator Gillibrand is an active member of the UCLA Law family. She embodies much of what this law school is about-service to the public and the broader community."

In 2006, Gillibrand, who had never held public office, defeated a well- known four-term Republican incumbent to win her seat in Congress. She served on the House Armed Services Committee and the Agriculture Committee. In addition to her committee assignments, Gillibrand founded the Congressional High Tech Caucus, with Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX), with the goal of ensuring that the United States remains at the forefront of emerging technologies and high tech industries.

During President Clinton's administration, Gillibrand served as special counsel to former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Andrew Cuomo. She later joined the law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, where in addition to her responsibilities at the firm she maintained an extensive pro- bono practice, working on behalf of abused women and children and tenants seeking safe affordable housing.

"Senator Gillibrand's UCLA School of Law family proudly wishes her well in her newest endeavor," said Schill.

Andrew Cuomo, John M. Finan Remain in the Senatorial Race for New York State in the Aftermath of Caroline Kennedy's Withdrawal

Andrew Cuomo, John M. Finan Remain in the Senatorial Race for New York State in the Aftermath of Caroline Kennedy's Withdrawal; Finan Also Announcing Mayoral Bid in Contention to Michael R. Bloomberg

/PRNewswire/ -- In an official January 22nd communique to Governor Paterson, John M. Finan has officially Stated: "Dear Governor Paterson; In making your final decision for replacing Senator Clinton I would like for you to have this pertinent information for your review and consideration: For your confidential review (ONLY) is the detailed patent information on the High Mileage vehicle and Vertical Wind Turbine (Attachments A and B) as outline in my previous communique to your office, copy of which is at the following web address. http://www.nyccg.com/Letter_To_Governor_Paterson_Finanh

Additionally, you will find communication that I have had with Congressman Rangel, Chairman House Ways and Means Committee, regarding our plans for the manufacture of either the vehicle or the turbine technologies in northern Manhattan, providing many good jobs. (Attachment C) It is important for you to know that it is my intent to announce, shortly after you announce your Senatorial choice, my Mayoral Candidacy for New York City. If selected for the Senatorial position, I feel that I could capture the Democratic and Libertarian nomination as well as the large Liberal Republican vote that exists in New York City. I will win. It is a certainty.

In the event that you do select me there will be several benefits that I see for New York, Our Country, and You. First and foremost is the fact that my intent to run for Mayor would allow for a free election by The People for the New York Senatorial Seat allowing all qualified candidates time to prepare and campaign. As we all agree, with the exception of a certain gentleman in Chicago and a certain gentleman in New York City, free elections are essential to Democracy. Regarding New York City, It is essential for the success of the Obama administration that the illegal attempt at a third term by Mayor Bloomberg be thwarted. It is essential that the State of New York be unified and the financial epicenter of the country not be controlled by elitists illegally manipulating the free electoral process and court system via illegal influence and illegal control of City Officials and Judges.

If The People are left to believe that a person such as Mayor R. Bloomberg can avoid a referendum and in a very Illegal, Dictatorial, Napoleonic fashion enforce his will on us, it will be very damaging to the psyche of The People of the City of New York, The State of New York, and ultimately The Nation.

Governor Paterson, Selecting me as US Senator will make you widely popular with The People and ensure the success of Our State, Your Success, The Success of the Obama Administration (Attachment E Nov 14th, 2009) and The Success of The United States of America. YES WE CAN!! LIVE FREE!!

Regardless of the fine decision that I know you will make, my plans remain as outlined above and I enlist your support and, always, you can count on mine.

CC: President Barack Obama"

John Finan Throws His Name in the Hat for Clinton's New York Senate Seat

Amongst Others, Including Caroline Kennedy, John M. Finan, President and CEO NYCCG, Past Presidential Candidate 2008, Libertarian Party, Has Submitted His Name to NY Governor David Paterson for Consideration as NY Senator to Replace the Upcoming Opening as the Result of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's Upcoming Appointment to Secretary of State by President-Elect Barack Obama

PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In his official Communique to Governor Paterson dated December 27, 2008, John M. Finan stated, "As you know, I have recently concluded a very successful campaign as a Libertarian write-in candidate for the 2008 Presidential race. As a result of this, which I have detailed below, I am in a position to bring much to the people and State of New York. At the urging of my supporters, I would like to ask you, with humility, to be considered for the position of Senator of New York.

1. We have an agreement in place to build high mileage vehicles which we can build in New York and bring good jobs. Initial funding is already in place from Canada. The Native Americans are also involved and anxious to cooperate, which we believe will be very positive for New York, and also alleviate some of the indignation that exists there. 2. We can work with Washington to obtain further funding and bring this and other projects and jobs to New York. 3. There is additional wind turbine technology which can also be brought to New York in deployment, development, and manufacture of the turbines. The turbines are well-suited for individual homes, wind farms, and urban centers. 4. We believe in your economic initiatives and we can help you bring prosperity to the State. We also, like you, support matrimonial law reform as a human rights issue via amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. 5. We have a major development plan which calls for the privatization and development of Saratoga State Park into a world class destination featuring art by Picasso, O'Keefe, Vincent van Gogh, Rauschenberg, Warhol, Renoir, Bob Ross, etc.; several new golf courses; a stadium; renovation of existing historic facilities; a professional sports team; indoor skiing; and an additional world class luxury (think Monte Carlo) hotel and casino complex (all predicated on the current town center and race track remaining as a historic area, and renovation of existing spa facilities and historic buildings). This initiative is being met with great enthusiasm and acceptance from the residents and local business people.

For many, I am merely the voice in the wilderness; however, what I say and stand for is true and vehemently supported. Additionally, there are other significant initiatives that we have begun through our company, New York City Consulting Group, which will bring both economic and social stability to New York, as detailed at www.nyccg.com.

As a Senator for New York I will work with you, other political leaders, and the private sector to get all of these initiatives completed for the State and people of New York. The success of these initiatives will also significantly affect the economic prosperity, happiness and freedom of the people of New York State and the citizens of the United States of America in a most positive way.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

With all sincerity, respect and humility,

John M. Finan"

Elizabeth Holtzman Calls for More Focus on Issues in New York Senate Seat Coverage

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In a statement today, former New York Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman stressed the importance of focusing on specific policy agendas and the key issues facing New Yorkers in the short time remaining before Governor Paterson must appoint a candidate to fill Hillary Clinton's U.S. Senate seat.

A candidate for consideration of the appointment herself, she wrote in Sunday's New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2008/12/28/2008-12-28_new_yorks_next_sena tor_needs_to_help_reb.html) that whoever is appointed will have the urgent tasks of turning around New York's economic and infrastructure decline, securing significant federal funds for New York from stimulus, infrastructure and other national initiatives, boosting upstate New York's economy and agricultural base and strengthening New York education and the SUNY system, among other key agenda items.

She said today, "We are fortunate to have a field of several well-qualified candidates for the Senate seat. The pertinent question is, which one of us is going to do the best for New York amid this historic crisis we're in? How specifically does each of us propose to address New York's biggest needs? Those needs are the paramount thing. Many New Yorkers are losing their jobs, their homes, or choosing between food and medicine. Ordinary New Yorkers are at the epicenter of this crisis and suffering acutely from it, yet they have gotten nothing concrete from this year's trillion-dollar bailouts. Since they can't vote on this Senate seat for another two years, we have an obligation to make sure whoever fills it now will represent New Yorkers' concerns most effectively. Who is best able from their first day on the job to get onto the Senate floor and into the cloakroom and fight for the federal resources we need to help us rebuild New York's economy and infrastructure, create jobs, resolve our very tough budget issues, reduce our Medicaid burden, meet our education needs, and generally be New Yorkers' advocate in Washington? This is what the Governor will weigh in making the appointment, and what media coverage should focus on, like a laser beam. It took a year and a half of primaries and many debates to choose the best presidential candidate. We have just a few weeks to choose the best person for this Senate seat; we must use them to focus relentlessly on the issues."

Former Rep. Holtzman spoke to Governor Paterson about her interest in serving in the U.S. Senate in early December. Her record in elective office includes leadership on civil rights as Brooklyn District Attorney, steering New York City through a fiscal crisis as City Comptroller, and eight years in Congress where she championed infrastructure spending on the House Budget Committee, stood up for the Constitution and the rule of law during the Watergate crisis on the House Judiciary Committee and co-founded the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues.
