The Libertarian Party (LP) will hold its National Convention in St. Louis from Saturday, May 29, through Monday, May 31.
The convention will take place at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis. The press is welcome to attend.
Information about the convention, including the schedule, is available at the convention website. The convention has been titled "Gateway to Liberty."
Additional meetings and related events will occur on May 27 and 28.
Unlike the Democratic and Republican parties, the Libertarian Party holds a national convention every two years. At this convention, delegates from around the country will be amending the party's platform and bylaws, and will elect officers and other members to the Libertarian National Committee.
One of the highlights of the convention will be the hotly contested election to replace outgoing Chairman William Redpath. Five Libertarians have declared their candidacies in that race.
Redpath commented, "We're seeing tremendous voter antipathy toward the Democratic and Republican parties. This is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Libertarian Party."
Currently, there are 632 Libertarian candidates declared for the November 2 elections, including 172 candidates for U.S. Congress. A list of candidates may be viewed here.
Among the speakers at the convention will be Bob Barr, the LP's 2008 presidential nominee.

Bob Barr media statement on the "Barr amendment"
Former U.S. Representative Bob Barr (7th Dist. GA, 1995-2003) today issued the following statement in response to the action last Thursday, July 16th, by the House of Representatives repealing the appropriations rider that, since 1998, had prohibited the District of Columbia from implementing a marijuana legalization referendum. The amendment was passed initially in 1998 and reinstated each year since, and was commonly known as the “Barr Amendment” because Barr had been its prime sponsor. Barr’s statement follows:
“Last week’s vote by the House of Representatives lifting the 11-year old prohibition on the District of Columbia from taking steps to pass and implement any measure decriminalizing or legalizing the sale or use of marijuana in the District, represents an important step in the direction of individual freedom and properly limiting the power of the federal government.
“While I in fact sponsored the initial appropriations limitation in 1998, the years since then have witnessed such a dramatic increase in federal government power and an unprecedented decrease in individual liberty, especially since 2001, that I have come to realize that such limitations as the so-called “Barr Amendment” are not and cannot be justified. It has become necessary to reevaluate the power of the federal government that I and others once were able or willing to justify, and do what we can to roll back the tide of government control.
“I have applauded also the indications by Attorney General Eric Holder to begin easing federal efforts against individuals in states that have moved to decriminalize or legalize the use of marijuana, and the fresh approach to the federal anti-drug effort as articulated earlier this year by Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drup Control Policy (the so-called “Drug Czar”).”

Barr blasts deficits, urges “tea partiers” to stay involved
Bob Barr, the 2008 Libertarian presidential nominee and former Republican congressman, urged Americans gathered at “tax day tea parties” Wednesday to continue their fight against government growth and to join Libertarian Party, the Party of Principle.
“If the protests are simply a one day event it will have no impact on Washington,” said Barr in a press conference held at the Libertarian National Committee’s Watergate offices in Washington, D.C. “It is incumbent on the people who are out there today to stay involved. There has to be a sustained effort. Otherwise the tide of government will wash right over us as if nothing happened.”
“There are a lot of Libertarians not only involved with the ‘tea party’ movement, but of course it was Libertarians who started the whole notion of organizing ourselves as freedom-loving men and women for an April 15 event,” said Barr.
Barr applauded anti-tax activists for successfully using the Internet and social networking websites to organize thousands of nationwide events, just as the Obama presidential campaign did in 2008.
“The Internet is being used much as the gazettes and flyers were being used in the pre-Revolutionary War period to spread the word of freedom and organize the citizens,” said Barr. “That is, to educate the citizenry as to what is going on in the government, as a medium to organize the citizenry to become involved, to have a common purpose.”
“Whenever the citizenry makes their voice heard in opposition to oppressive government programs and excessive government spending which is hurting the populace in this county, it’s a good thing,” said Barr.
Barr concluded: “It’s important for people to realize just what government is doing to them. The national debt right now, and it grows by millions of dollars every single day, is approaching $11.5 trillion dollars. Every man, woman and child in this country, not just taxpayers, but every man women and child, owes, because of that debt, approximately $40,000. That’s money coming out their pocket, it comes out of their businesses, it is dramatically limiting the freedom people have in this country to do what they want to do with their lives. And that’s power the government is taking from them.

Barr Condemns Newest Bailout
Former Congressman Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party's 2008 presidential nominee, issued a statement condemning the proposed $15-billion bailout of the auto industry apparently nearing approval in the Congress. Barr said “the Faustian bargain” the Big 3 automakers reached with lawmakers “compounds the problem” of the massive bailouts backed by Congress and the Bush Administration, and apparently is structured so as to give the federal government a degree of involvement and control of GM, Ford, and Chrysler that the companies “will live to regret.”
Barr went on to say that while the auto industry has a better case for protection than insurance giant AIG, which already has secured some $85 billion in taxpayer-funded bailout money, the contemplated auto bailout will solve none of the underlying problems facing the industry or the economy. AIG, for example, Barr noted, was the “master of its own demise,” and directly contributed to creating the current economic crisis; the auto companies did not. Other entities also responsible for creating the mortgage crisis, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, were also given massive bailouts earlier in the year. It is difficult, given these precedents, to deny others the benefit already granted these other entities, but, Barr noted, we should not put even more taxpayer dollars at risk.
